Sometimes music is a memory of a place. Each note chosen with purpose and released into the world at the exact right time as an elegy for past lives and bad decisions. The smell of the beach in an exact moment in time that hits like a ton of bricks, full of hope and void of the longing to come. Josh Mason’s "Timecode Beach" is a stunning document of such a place, of such moments. As disparate loops crackle through an aural haze, Mason uses an evocative palette to draw you in.
Using only a small array of guitars and bass, "Timecode Beach" is rich in detail and devastating in its effect. With the structures of each piece playing a pivotal role, Mason sonically portrays the feeling of being stuck in a mental rut, trying to find a way to move forward. It all happens slowly, almost impercitably, but by the end of the album the time for holding back has passed and there is, finally, freedom to move ahead again.
